Game 6

Game 6 - July 18, 2010 - As expected, the Spitballs came out shooting in their matchup with Treat America on Sunday. The Balls were coming coming into the game having had a 3 week break due to the 4th of July weekend and a rainout the previous week. There wasn't much rust though as fielding was sharp and hitting was spot on.

As is customary, the Spitballs bats came alive right out of the gate by putting up 9 runs in the first inning. Treat America had a hard time fielding balls all day and it was evident that this was going to be a long day for their infielders. With the sun beaming down on their faces, they chased grounder after grounder, but to no avail. The hot dirt of the infield proved to have just enough skip that the Spitballs seemed as if they were never going to get out. Most balls hit to the outfield fell safely in the grass as Treat America's outfielders showed a lack of speed or general athletic prowess all day. Give credit to the Spitballs base running too as they constantly pushed the pace of the game, taking extra bases at every chance.

In the field, the Spitballs stayed sharp despite shuffling people around to different positions. The team turned double plays and ran down fly balls in no man's land, chugging beers all the while. One statistic that makes the defensive showcase even more impressive is the team BPI for this week. There were 61 beers put away out of 48 innings for a season high BPI of 1.271. One leader in this category was the captain at the helm for the Spitballs, Danny Kaminsky (Hacksaw). Hacksaw threw a complete game shutout with an unprecedented 2 strikeout performance. Coincidentally his 2.0 strikeouts per game are the same as the 2.0 BPI he turned in on Sunday (8 beers, 4 innings). He has a good day at the plate going 1-2 with a double and a run scored, and he brought a sweet new game to play in the parking lot. For the first time that I know of, the Spitballs enjoyed a few games of ladder golf before and after the game. Most of these factors individually would be enough to make the nomination, but with all of them put together, there's no doubt that Danny "Hacksaw" Kaminsky is this week's Player of the Week and Heavyweight Champion of the Diamond. It's not surprising that he earned this award this year coming from such a blood-line. The Great Bobby Heenan once pointed out about Hacksaw's relatives, ""His grandmother was a taped fist champion. His father was an Irish Setter." Hacksaw was quoted as saying after the game, "Yes, taking a shower is a high-risk maneuver for me and yes, there's a ring around my tub, but there's also one around my finger." Keep up the great work Hacksaw!
